Round…5?
Posted by Deutlich on March 11th, 2009 | Filed under: UncategorizedSince 2004, I have been a lazy asshole. It has been exactly five years since I legitimately bothered taking my health seriously. I would exercise sporatically, but never with the intention of a real lifestyle change. I mean, I used to look like this:

And yes, I realize I’ve complained about this before. But bare with me.
There are several things I would like to undertake in the near(er) future. Hiking is one of them. Running a half-marathon is another. That’s thirteen miles of solid running in a specified timeframe, people. And while I’m at it, I want to try white water rafting too.
I can barely jog for two minutes straight without my arteries screaming in protest. Despite this, I have been going to the gym every day.
Every day I get on that treadmill and motivate myself to push just a little bit harder. Just a little bit farther. Today was the first day that I knocked out six minutes of jogging.
To you super fit people, that’s laughable. But for me? That is the kind of moment that puts a spruce in my step and gives me more dignity than I can fully explain.
I am proud of myself.
And I missed that feeling.

I am proud of you too, honey.
Aww, shucks. Thank you!
March 11th, 2009 at 8:49 am
I’m proud of you too. You really look fierce in that picture
Keep it up!:)
Thanks, doll! I will!
March 11th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Well I’m proud of you too! I wish I was motivated to go to the gym. My sister and I have been talking about getting a gym membership together, but we’re both so lazy.
My gym membership is the one thing I’m most proud of spending money on in the last year.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:51 am
I was wondering when you were going to update your blog. The blogosphere missed you!
Six minutes of jogging is really good, especially since one minute makes me feel like my lungs are going to implode.
Yeah, sorry I went MIA for a while. But thank you!!
March 11th, 2009 at 8:52 am
I applaud your six minutes with great vigor. I think I can do 90 seconds without dying.
Aw, thanks darling.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:54 am
Shit that’s awesome! I suck at/loathe jogging too, so I completely understand!
I so, so miss the days that I could jog for a full half an hour without stopping. One day. One day soon I shall recapture that.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:55 am
Goodness, I know how this feels. I hate running and always have but last summer I was able to run 4 miles without stopping and it was glorious but I still hated every.single.minute. of it. Now, I have a workout DVD that I do at least once a day, at least 5 times a week, and I love it! Congrats
Keep it up!
I don’t know what my quirk is, but I get a thrill out of jogging. It’s almost spooky.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Congratulations! I despise working out, but I too must start taking my health more seriously. Thank you for providing some inspiration.
You are very welcome.
Also? It was SUPER great getting to hang out with you.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:59 am
That six minutes is SO worth celebrating. I do not run well, though I wish I could. Keep at it, and you’ll hit 8, 10, 12 in no time! And I missed your blog.
I’m stoked for the day I hit 30. Woo!
March 11th, 2009 at 9:03 am
I can’t run on a treadmill, it kills me. I am one of those elliptical people, one of those “I can’t have ANY impact, I barely can manage walking around a mall” type of people.
When I first started working out in ‘03, I was an elliptical person too. I . could . not . run . But I’m forcing myself to get used to it. And liking it. Heh.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:07 am
I need me some of that. Motivation, that is.
Ah, yes. My motivation is threefold 1) Hot Chiropractor. 2) My neck pain: a stronger back = less pain. 3) My old body. I want it back. But mostly it’s the super flaming hot chiro.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:07 am
It’s NOT laughable – it’s admirable! I hope you find that a lot of fit people are supportive of one another. I am not sure how fit I am, but I am training for a half, and I don’t judge anyone based on how they exercise/how long/or how hard. I am just excited that they’re getting out there and doing it!
Good for you
Y’know, the folks at my gym are all pretty smiley and nice. And I like that.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:09 am
Well done!
I used to run miles at a time and, right now, think that I could barely run for four minutes without keeling over. But six? No way.
The first day that I run two miles straight I am throwing a party. Right after I pick myself up from the floor.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Work it!
Today I went to my local park for the 1st time to jog. I’ve only ever speed-walked on the many trails, then I stopped going completely.
It was tough and I got pooped out very fast, but I know if I keep at it, I will be able to run for longer periods and slim down. I refuse to back down like I usually do! These jeans are getting a little snug.
Good for you! And yeah.. don’t even get me started on jeans… ha
March 11th, 2009 at 9:17 am
If you live anywhere with hiking, I’d totally look into that. It doesn’t feel like exercise to me, partly because it’s not in a rubber-smelling room with many whirring machines but no scenery (sorry, I can’t do gyms).
If you find it exhausting at first, here’s a trick I try when the hike gets too long: Set a distance or a period of time where you focus intently on one sense. Think carefully about everything you SEE for a half mile or 3 minutes or whatever. Then focus carefully on everything you SMELL. Then focus on what you hear. Then for a break you can touch some trees or some plants (not poison ivy!!) or some rocks.
It actually makes the exploration side of the hike more intense and exciting!
Oooh, I like all of those suggestions! Thank you!
March 11th, 2009 at 9:20 am
I’m all about running half marathons. My friends & I do a collab blog/vlog for running. If you ever need motivation, visit us: http://adorunrun.wordpress.com
Otherwise, this is our last half marathon video. If you need inspiration/motivation, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS2i9TtQiXg&fmt=18
I won’t be in shape for a half marathon for a long, long while. But when I DO run one – I will .. probably faint from excitement.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Bin TOTAL stolz auf dich! (I hope that means what I think it does. :p)!
Baby steps are where long distance runs start. I still recommend you start with a few smaller races before tackling a full or half marathon. Interested in running a 5K with me this June, or an 8K this July? I’m slow, and totally not hardcore (I even sometimes walk! *gasp!*) but I always like to train for these things, and the races are fun.
And hey, let me know if you’re in the market for a hiking buddy, and want to pick me! I am always looking for someone who wants to go hiking with me, and most of my friends aren’t really the outdoor types.
You DID say that right!! And I am going to take your advice and do a 5k first and move up from there. And I may actually be running that 5k that you speak of in June. So.. maybe? Hahaha. We gotta keep in touch regarding that.
March 11th, 2009 at 9:28 am
go you!!!
thankya
March 11th, 2009 at 9:30 am
good for you woman!
thanks, doll!
March 11th, 2009 at 9:49 am
I went white-water rafting when we were in Costa Rica, and I am HOOKED. Get Maxie! We need to plan a trip to WV pronto now that the weather’s nice!
DUDE! I am totally, totally in. And I’ll even drive! Because I like to. Because I’m weird. And YES YES YES!
March 11th, 2009 at 9:54 am
I will DEFINITELY run a half-marathon with you. You just let me know when.
Also, when I first started running, I had to do it in intervals. I’d walk for 5 minutes, run for 3, walk for 5, etc. Easing into it helped a lot.
Easing is the oooonly way I can go. Haha. And yay!
March 11th, 2009 at 10:33 am
UM i was just about to say i will totally go white water rafting!!! LETS DO THIS
KICK ASS!
March 11th, 2009 at 10:36 am
good job, love. that’s awesome. and 6 minutes jogging isn’t laughable at all!! it’s very commendable!! keep up the great work!! :]
thanks dearie!
March 11th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Definitely! 6 minutes jogging is better than 8 hours sitting at the desktop, like me, so go girl!
btw, is that Howie D? he looks like him…and better.
It IS Howie D! You get bonus points for being the first to figure that out. That’s us in Mexico.
March 11th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Baby steps!!!!!!!!!!
Yes! Definitely!
March 11th, 2009 at 10:56 am
i HATE running. when i go on the treadmill, my goal is to get through an entire song without dying. so far, so good. i’m still alive.
yes! and that’s a good thing. i like you alive.
March 11th, 2009 at 11:02 am
way to go! im proud of you too
i loathe treadmills – and i LOOOOVE that you’re with howie d! OMG!
And I love that you even know who he is!
March 11th, 2009 at 11:17 am
You are awesome, and seeing as how I myself live on the opposite end of healthy, I’m offering you “ooh!” and “ah!” to cheer you on.
I <3 you.
March 11th, 2009 at 11:30 am
You exercisers are making my sloth look bad. Hrmph.
I’m sorry!
March 11th, 2009 at 11:31 am
That’s how you have to do it! Good for you. Isn’t it the greatest feeling once you’ve done something aerobic even though it was a battle getting yourself to do it? Then you look and the mirror and expect to see results immediately, that’s the part that gets me. Still feels good though.
It feels amazing. A.Mazing.
March 11th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Try going to a class at your gym! They usually are easier than running, but help with just keeping your heart rate up for an hour… then the running will come easier.
PLUS 6 minutes is pretty long, man! Next time do 4 minutes running, then 1 minute catch your breath walking, then 4 minutes running (instead of aiming for 7 minutes straight)
Congrats!
While I like the idea of a class, I much more prefer the treadmill in the mornings with a bunch of weight training after. That’s sort’ve my style. And I DEFINITELY agree about interval training. Heh.
March 11th, 2009 at 11:35 am
that’s awesome! its the little triumphs that make a difference! I remember running to me was 3.8 on the treadmill, now its a 5.6 for 20 min and the rest at a 4.6. I remember every single time I went up on the incline, or speed!
Keep it up! it took me forever to get to 6 min straight!
Ha! Yes! And gah.. 5.6? I remember those days….four years ago….
March 11th, 2009 at 11:35 am
Congrats! Count me as another one proud of you. One day you’ll be running and laughing at the rest of us. I wish I could do six minutes of running. One day.
You could totally do it. I have faith.
March 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am
why is everyone all trying to lose weight when i’m pregnant?!! you suck…
i keed, i keed!
congrats and continued success!
lub you!
(jeez, i’m even snipey on the interwebs…dang!)
now you KNOW i can’t go on lookin’ like this. i mean, blah.
March 11th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Sounds like we’re all starting to get in the swing of things. I’ve started going back to yoga classes and I totally have the same feeling.
I tried yoga once.. it was not my cup of tea. But i’m glad you enjoy it!
March 11th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Good for you! And keep it up, trust me, that feeling stays with you.
Oh, yes it does. I remember it fondly. Like my favorite pair of jeans I can’t wear anymore..
March 11th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
That’s a sweet visor.
Ha! hahahahaha
March 11th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Exercise is something you do for you so that feeling of eupohoria and self-dignity? That’s what it’s all about. Good luck Ma’am.
Thanks doll
March 11th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
There is no way I could jog for four minutes, so I think that’s awesome!
Grazi!
March 11th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Oooh, I love hiking…or just plodding around in the woods.
And running six minutes is where I am stuck at the moment (even doing intervals, wah), so I totally get how big a deal it is, and the ensuing self-attended celebration.
yeah, the other 34 minutes I just walked at a brisk pace with an elevation.. heh
March 11th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
i can’t even run one minute without losing it, haha. hence why i am walking a half marathon and not running. but props to you. woo.
walking is perfectly acceptable.
March 11th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
That is great.
And, can I recommend exercise TV on demand? Pilates is the best, you just lay on your mat and do relaxing exercises.
They actually have pilates classes at my gym. I’ll start going to them again in the future.
March 11th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
It’s so so cool to set and achieve fitness goals–they’re so much more tangible than lots of other goals, I think, and it makes you feel so good when you make it.
One thing I do that you can borrow if you like is I set a monthly goal (January’s was running 3x/week, any distance I felt like) and choose a reward I will get myself if I make it. This month’s reward is a bikini!
Monthly goals are the jam. So is adding another 5-10 pounds to my weight routine. Heh.
March 11th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
YAYYY!!! Dude– I remember when I first started working out again for the first time since high school. I ran two minutes at 4.8 on the treadmill and thought I was going to die. It took me a long-ass time, but now I consistently do 30 minutes at 5.8-6.5 (depending on how lazy i am feeling).
I still can’t believe it. But congratulations… I know the feeling you are talking about and it is the BESSTTT.
It really IS the best. Whoo!
March 11th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I’m proud of you too dear! You’re doing great. I know it’s tough to get back into it but it takes baby steps.
Aw, thank you hon!
March 11th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
I refuse to run. So your six minutes of jogging is enviable! Congrats!
As much as I hate it. I really love it.
March 11th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
YOU GO GIRL!!! I’ve been doing two hours everyday on the treadmill myself. Except on the weekends. It’s a killer but I have but one life and I need it to be healthy.
By the way, you are sexy beyond belief! Love it girl!
That’s awesome! Seriously!! Aw, and thank you!
March 11th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Yay you! But just some advice, do some weight training too to strengthen your muscles so you don’t succumb to any injuries.
Oh, I do weight training. Lots and lots of it. ;-D My body aches.
March 12th, 2009 at 5:50 am
Quick tip: in the beginning, don’t think about how many minutes you ran – that makes you feel worse about it – think about how far you ran. 6 minutes probably took you to about 1/2 a mile, or maybe more. That’s pretty great for someone who hasn’t run regularly in a while. Once you start getting to 20+ minutes, then worry about the time.
Good luck, lady! You can do it!!
I probably should have clarified that I do my fast-paced cardio for 40 minutes, it’s just that 6 of it was jogging.
March 12th, 2009 at 6:19 am
Great job! It’s tough to get back into it. I’m in the same boat. I’m back at the gym and also training for a half marathon and doing weights. The other day my arms hurt so bad I thought I was going to have to ask my husband to cut off my sports bra because lifting my arms was brutal
Putting my jacket on just now was absolutely horrendous. HORRIBLE. Blah
March 12th, 2009 at 6:28 am
From the girl who has run 5 marathons and equally as many 1/2 marathons, I think your achievement is AMAZING. Because there was a time when I didn’t run at all. Unless it was on a soccer field. And even then I complained. And one day, a boyfriend of mine told me I can run. When I began to offer excuses why I couldn’t run, he said I can run, just not as fast as I think I should. And that was the kick in the butt I needed. Like you, I started building slowly. Eventually, I was running 1-3 miles on any given day. One day, I surprised myself and ran 5 miles with my boyfriend. And one day after that, I decided to run a marathon (never having run more than 5 miles). To you, I say keep at it! And when you’re ready, find a group who will help you train for your 1/2 marathon goal. You will get there – and it will feel incredible!
I think I’ve already found that group! But YAAY for motivation!
March 12th, 2009 at 6:48 am
who is the hottie with you?? and you look fabulous in that pic by the way too, i know you can get to that point again.
That would be Howie D from the Backstreet Boys. We were in Cozumel, Mexico. Heh.
March 12th, 2009 at 6:49 am
I think you’re gonna win round 5, easily. It won’t even be close.
Aw, thank you love.
March 12th, 2009 at 7:42 am
Yay!
It sucks while you’re doing it but when you’re done it feels sooooo good.
It feels even better than a pint of ice cream and some good lezzie porn.
Wait.
WHAT AM I SAYING????
March 12th, 2009 at 8:25 am
I really needed to read that! I’m supposed to be on the treadmill right now as I type. Well, here I go! Great job on the 6 minutes – heck, I can’t even breathe after 1.5 minutes, lol!
March 12th, 2009 at 8:40 am
Hot DAMN, look at you!
I have never looked that good in a bikini. Then again, I don’t have your fabulous rack.
And I totally feel you. My body simply does *not* run. At all. End of story. Though I wish it did, because I am getting super smooshy lately. Being a stress eater totally doesn’t help, I’m sure.
March 12th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
When it comes to fitness, baby steps are the ONLY way to make a permanent change. Jumping into the deep end is bad and can cause injury.
March 13th, 2009 at 5:48 am
GO DEUTLICH!! From one 6 min jogger to another: YOU ARE THE AWESOMENESS!
March 13th, 2009 at 6:20 am
I will totally go hiking with you! Is there anywhere to go around here though, other than Great Falls?
March 13th, 2009 at 6:56 am
Congrats, girl! That is a milestone, definitely. I, too, wanna run a half, so good luck with your training bc I know you can do it
March 13th, 2009 at 7:32 am
Congratulation to the 6 min. Despite being a passionate runner myself (did a couple of halfmarathons until my achilles tendons went on strike)- I would advise to only continue the running if you really like it.
If you don’t like it, switch to swimming or biking, no need to torture yourself.
But if you used to like it before, and it’s just about getting back into the routine, then you should stick to it. And start SLOW, it’s healthier and more effective. And maybe you will find someone running with you, at least for me it’s easier. Why not run outdoors, treadmills suck (and you guys are much luckier with the weather!) I had a couple of nice outdoor runs around the neighborhood in Alexandria (where my friend lives).
Races are great to motivate you reaching your goals. I always sign up for winter races to keep up with the training.
And I don’t think running shapes your body better than weights do, but for me it’s kind of a mental training, just makes me happy, and feel stronger and more focused.
(Could talk hours about running, if you want to know anything further, just drop me a mail).
Good luck!
March 13th, 2009 at 8:29 am
dude! i totally know what you mean! 6 minutes is HUGE for nonrunners (i am one, i VERY MUCH KNOW). i always feel like a tool being like “i ran 2.5 whole miles today! well, except i walked part of them!” and being so excited because i know for most people, that’s, like, a lazy sunday afternoon. but for me that is BIG NEWS. and HARD. so go you, dude. fucking awesome.
March 13th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
you are doing great!!!
i recently saw pics of me in high school and could not believe the difference between the bod then and the bod now. HORRORS. i have my work cut out for me!!!
March 15th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
you gotta start somewhere and you’ll get it back soon! that’s what happens to me when i get back on the bandwagon. the exponential growth will be worth it!
March 16th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Hey I want to run a half marathon too! Hopefully this year? Is it possible to cyber-train together? I just recently ran 2.5 miles for the first time in my life. I think the key is walking a little bit first, and then I count that, but try to up it the next time. *try* I’m mad impressed that you go to the gym everyday. Only in my dreams!
