Stupid TV

I need to let you folks in on a secret.

I can’t stand the show, Dexter.

I think it’s vile and I find no entertainment in it what so ever. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, Dexter is the main character and he plays a serial killer that moonlights as a police officer. Basically, he goes after the criminals he comes across and slaughters them.

It’s my opinion that killing people who killed people to show that killing is wrong is fucking stupid.

Catching my drift?

I tried to get into the show because the interwebs were all a flutter about it. But there are just some things I don’t like. And sometimes jumping on a bandwagon just leaves me bruised because I’m a klutz and easily fall off.

While I can be a down-right bitch hostile, I don’t condone unnecessary violence and I absolutely can not back the idea of murder. Capitol punishment makes me sick.

It’s also a damn waste of our tax dollars, but that’s a story for another day.

The only thing I could think of when I watched Dexter was the atrociousness of it all. I mean, that guy is sick and gave me the creeping willies.

I’m trying to figure out why so many people enjoy the show, but I just can’t wrap my head around it.

It may be a loyalty to Six Feet Under for some. For me, I don’t know, it’s just interesting. A twisted CSI almost…

Hey, I think everyone’s got the right to enjoy what they want. It just kinda creeps me out. A lot.

  2. 2 Liebchen Says:

I’ve never watched it. For some reason, it never really appealed to me. I’ll take my creepy crime shows in the form of NCIS and Law and Order: SVU, thank you very much.

Now those are shows I can get behind. I LOVE NCIS.

  3. 3 Marie Says:

I really liked it, but I’m always into those CSI typish tv series. But it doesn’t have to be for everyone. I can’t get on all the popular bandwagons like say Twilight. Didn’t read it and don’t want to watch it.

I reeeeeeefuse to read or watch Twilight. Absolutely refuse. But I LOVE Harry Potter. So I can’t really talk.

  4. 4 Dutchess of Kickball Says:

I think people like it because of that morbid curiosity, sort of like why Six Feet Under was a such a hit. I’m not addicted to it, but I like it. But there is something weird about the chemistry between the brother and sister, like too much attraction or something. It might be on purpose to make it more creepy or it could be that the two actors just got married in real and aren’t good at faking it, not sure.

That is something I picked up on too and I HAVE a brother so that reeeally squicked me out.

  5. 5 andhari Says:

If thats the reason you dont like Dexter, it means you will not want to watch one of my favorite movies ever : Death Note. LOL. But yeah I dont watch Dexter too.

Thanks for the heads up. ;) I’ll try to steer clear of Death Note.

  6. 6 jenniti Says:

The appeal is the character Dexter himself. He’s a sociopath, fakes his emotions, has the need to kill, and only kills murderers as some kind of ‘code’. He is creepy, but it’s fascinating to watch how his mind works. It’s a very clever show.

Eh.. I don’t know that I’d call it clever. I’m just not into condoning murder.

  7. 7 Tricia Says:

It’s like a trainwreck that I can’t turn my eyes from. It is creepy for sure, and the fact that no one see’s through his creepiness seems odd to me.

The whole thing just wigs me out.

  8. 8 Jenn Says:

He typically kills people that are absolutely horrible but slip through the cracks of the justice system. Basically, a fatal vigilante. What makes the show so appealing to me is the writing and the psychology behind it. The writers have found a way for the audience to root for someone we’re taught to fear and disgust.

That said, while watching the show I do sometimes wake up and realize that hey, I’m essentially hoping good things for someone who takes lives away and it kind of scares me a little. But, again, that makes me appreciate the writing again.

Buuuut I hate bandwagon shows like ANTM and Project Runway, so what do I know?

I get that he typically kills people who slip through the cracks – but there in lies my issue. That doesn’t make it right. And going back to my anti-capitol punishment thing, I can’t see why it’s okay in any way, shape or form. Moreover, I am a very, very staunch believer in what comes around goes around. Dexter is just stepping out of bounds, IMO.

  9. 9 Travis Says:

I’ve never watched “Dexter,” so I don’t know what the appeal is. Must be because the main actor was in “Six Feet Under.” Who knows.

Me, I’m still trying to figure out Ray J got his own reality dating show, and who would want to see that!

How DID Ray J get a reality show?! I betcha he sucked somebody’s dick. I hear that’s how people become famous…

  10. 10 S.Vincent Says:

I think Jenn hit the nail on the head. Dexter is actually a very moral man except for his one flaw. He loves his father, he loves his sister, and he loves his girlfriend her kids and his coworkers. But he has a need that has to be filled. He has a system to help him control his addiction while simultaneously filling a need of society (killing other killers).

It’s expertly written and acted. I hope you started at the beginning of the show where all of this was laid out. That really sets the tone for the whole series and you get to know the entire history of why Dexter does what he does.

I don’t understand how you can say a murderer is a “moral man.” And yep, I started at the beginning..and stopped two episodes in.

  11. 11 f.B Says:

I have no idea. I’ve got such a set list of shows to watch that there’s been no room for something new in a long time. And I’m gonna take your word on how creepy Dexter sounds and not bother trying.

    Smart man.

  12. 12 Passionista Says:

While I also don’t agree with capitol punishment, I didn’t like Dexter for other reasons. I watched a few episodes when they aired it on regular channels (not Showtime) and I just couldn’t get into it or find it interesting. Plus all the narration of his thoughts? Weird. I didn’t like it in the Wonder Years either so this is evidently a pattern.

Yeah, I can definitely see your point.

  13. 13 cheese Says:

I watched the first season, and couldn’t really get into it at all. The creep factor didn’t bother me that much, as I can pretty much disassociate myself from the reality of cheering for a serial killer.

By the way, he’s not a serial killer who moonlights as a cop. He’s a forensics expert that moonlights as a serial killer.

But my biggest complaint about it is that it’s just a BAD cop show. Watch any scenes with cops interacting, and it’s just lazy writing, flat characters, and typical cop-talk.

I guess I’m spoiled after The Wire, but I expected more out of it.

I thought he started killing things at an early age, making him a serial killer first?

  14. 14 Beth Says:

I have to admit, I love the show. I guess I don’t base my liking on whether I agree with what the main character is doing or not, but more if it is just entertaining or not. But I am with other who said that occasionally you have this moment in the show where you all of a sudden realize you are rooting for this sicko, and it is scary. The writing is tricky that way… you have to keep remembering that he is not a hero at all.

On this note, I never watch Grey’s Anatomy either but right now they have this (totally not believable but whatever) plot going on where the doctors have to save the life of a guy on death row but the inmate wants to refuse surgery and donate his organs to a sick kid instead. So, like Dexter, I think the writers are just trying to get people to think about how some people view death as more than just black and white and make you think about it. I mean, using death/violence as entertainment is another topic all-together but there ya go.

I find it immensely interesting what is out there as a form of entertainment today, in contrast to what was out there just 10-20 years ago. And as for the GA story line, part of me felt very much like Grey did, but the other part of me wigged out at the idea of an innocent kid having the organs of such an atrocious person.

  15. 15 Matt Says:

    ^What she said.

Who cares if what he is doing is wrong or right. It entertains me for hours….

and I hope he never gets caught.

I think I’m now worried about you.

  16. 16 Froggy Says:

I freaking LOVE that show for a variety of reasons. One is the phenomenal performances turned in by the cast. The other is the idea that I am a very non-violent person myself, do not condone violence in others, yet this show has managed to craft itself in a way that has me empathizing with and rooting for a freakin’ serial killer! It distorts my own perspective, which really is escapism at its best… and that’s what TV is all about.

I don’t know if I’m expressing myself clearly or not, but I guess what I’m saying is: I love the show because it somehow manages to make me love it, even though the rational part of my brain says I shouldn’t.

It’s like sadomasochistic sex without the trouble sitting down the next day. Or something.

Gah! I just.. I just think it’s creepy. I can’t get over it.

  17. 17 LiLu Says:

It definitely never appealed to me. I’ll stick with my Tool Academy and Real Housewives, thankyouverymuch.

Haaahahahaha. Bad TV at it’s finest.

  18. 18 Meghan Says:

I kinda have a star crush on the character of Dexter. I realize the creepiness of that statement.

    Oh man, that is weeeird.

  19. 19 sauer kraut Says:

Never watched it. What have I missed?

    Not much.

  20. 20 alexa - cleveland's a plum Says:

hmmm, see i have no opinion on this cause i don’t think i have ever seen a whole episode, but knowing my taste in shows i probably would love it.

i like blood, guts, sex and murder.

    no i’m not evil.

    Interesting.

  21. 21 Arjewtino Says:

You’re missing the point of the show entirely.

You’re right, it IS too bad I won’t be in town Friday because then I could explain why you’re wrong.

I’m not wrong. You’re just weird.

  22. 22 rs27awesome Says:

I think the show is immensely well written and it keeps me entertained instead of eating cheetos.

    But I like cheetos.

Damn, now I’m confused as to what to do.

I just can’t agree on the well written thing. Sorry. But cheetos are awesome.

  23. 23 apollocreed Says:

I always thought the show was a rip-off of American Pyscho. But either way, I don’t have Showtime, so I’ll never watch the show anyway.

Showtime is boring anyway. Skinemax is where it’s at. Duh.

  24. 24 Viviane Says:

I think Froggy put it quite well. I am against capital punishment as well, but then I am also against torture and I love watching 24. I guess for me it is just entertainment, and nothing to do with reality.
I find the psyche of psychopaths and serial killers fascinating, and I think it is amazingly done by the writers that they have us rooting for one. The fact that I clearly would not support a serial killer in real life has nothing to do with it, it’s just fiction after all, and thank God for that, else we could ask incest to Dexter’s issues. ;)

I keep cringing when people refer to that stuff as entertaining. I think I’m just programmed to be hypersensitive.

  25. 25 Akilah Sakai Says:

Saw the commercials for Dexter, but never jumped.

LURV the new layout and new dotcom. Go on with your “official” self!

    Thanks dear!

  26. 26 Maxie Says:

I’ve never seen Dexter, but you know what show is lame?

    Lost.

Never utter such blasphemy in my blog evar again. Or. Or. Or.. I’ll wallpaper your house with Hokie gear!

  27. 27 Alice Says:

i’ve never seen it! but knowing me…. i’d totally love it. i love creepy disturbing stuff, AND i love shows that have nothing to do with what i like in real life (like.. you know.. buffy the vampire slayer) :-)

Buffy and Angel? Now those are shows that I am all about. Oh, and Charmed. Because yes.

  28. 28 BIBI Says:

I never got into the show, so thanks for the heads up! Now I know I won’t be watching it. :)

    Smart move ;)

  29. 29 nicopolitan Says:

I considered “The Creeping Willies” as a band name, but after looking at it, it is actually not that great of a band name.

Oh, wait, this is about TV right?

I’m glad to hear you reconsidered the name.

  30. 30 allthewine Says:

I don’t watch the show, so I’ll agree with you. BUT I LOVE THE NEW PLACE.

  31. 31 Allison Says:

It had a few nominations at the SAG awards and I just kept wondering what the hell the show is about. Never had any desire to watch it.

It’d just be a waste of your time, anyway.

  32. 32 the ex Says:

Everyone kept telling me to watch Dead Like Me and I finally got it on Netflix? Totally sucked butt. Sucked. Butt.

I’m still waiting to get Dexter. Can’t wait to see if it lives up to the hype or if I share your opinion!

I’ve never even heard of Dead Like Me. . . now I’m curious!

  33. 33 katelin Says:

i’ve yet to hop on the dexter bandwagon but i watch enough shows with cops and violence so i think i’m set, haha.

    I totally feel you

  34. 34 Princess Pointful Says:

Dexter is actually my favourite show on TV, more because of his character than anything. It is dorky, but everyone in the forensic psychiatric clinic I work at watches it, and talks about the characters. (e.g., we all agree that Dexter isn’t a true sociopath!)

  35. 35 elle Says:

ugh. i had to watch Dexter awkwardly once with the guy i’ve been sleeping with (but not dating!), his older (gorgeous) brother, and their personality-less and thus incredibly awkward friend.

i watched one episode and was left totally uncharmed and with a longing for a cuban, which was not conducive to my diet or anything, and also which gave me nothing to talk to Cardboard Girl about.

i agree with you in that the show is useless. i prefer TV that knows that it is useless. ummmm likeadoubleshotatlovewiththeikkitwins.

    because i am super classy.

  36. 36 elle Says:

and by Cardboard Girl i mean their female friend, whose personality is less entertaining than cardboard, etc.

  37. 37 CN Heidelberg Says:

I can’t wrap my head around why anyone likes ANY violent/super-crimey/misery-filled TV show, so I’m even further behind on this element of pop culture. :/ How is watching misery, suffering, murder, rape, etc etc etc entertainment? I truly can’t understand it.

  38. 38 inkpuddle Says:

Finally! I can’t stand the show – at all. And not just the plot or premise of it, but the acting, the script, even the flippin’ lighting…all of it grates on me. Ech. Nope, I’m happy with my SVU.
