Responsiblity is Lame

Y’all! I miss college!

There are days when I am all sorts of fond of my “adult status” and the feeling of getting old as fuck. But sometimes I like to reminisce.

I wasn’t the best student. There a many, many boring reasons for this so I’ll spare you the details.

What I really loved about my university years? Fuckin’ around. And no – not that kind of fuckin’ around – but the kind in which I hardly bothered with class. Like, ever. Instead, I went to chill with my best friends and got stupid high.

What is it about collegiate weed anyway? I swear, it comes in special grades not found elsewhere. And the crystals on those suckers! Dear goodness don’t even get me started on that sparkly goodness.

Looking back on it, I realize this was a much bigger waste of money than I’d ever like to admit to, but I don’t particularly care. If anything, it was an entire era of learning experiences.

Our university was nestled in a mountainous region not far from the West Virginia and North Carolina borders. Virginia Tech’s buildings are made from really pretty stone which was eloquently dubbed “Hokie Stone.” The area itself has a mash up of Northern Virginia yuppies, local hippies and everything in between. It wasn’t hard to find vegan restaurants across from hookah bars which were down the street from “glass shops”. It’s a crisp area where the air smells completely different from what I am accustom to.

In one word, it’s magical and I don’t even care how cliche that sounds.

I miss the care free attitude. The days of independence and new adventures. When smoking herbal remedies was totally The Thing To Do.

With age comes more responsibility.

I find this completely overrated.

I had this moment the other day. We’re kinda stuck in between student party life awesomeness and young professional with money and excitement awesomeness. I’m trying to figure out how to become more of the latter instead of trying to go back to the former.

  2. 2 Renee Says:

We used to walk around the lakes late at night smoking something else… wait for it… CIGARS. We were too classy.

  3. 3 Maxie Says:

I have an idea. We need to have a “pretend we’re in college weekend”. We’ll wear our university stuff (you can wear some of my WVU stuff if you want) get shitty and be completely irresponsible.

    I’m always down for that.

  4. 4 Narm Says:

I spent my morning feeling like a Grown Up because I was handling huge budgets and crazy ad campaigns – but when I put those pizza rolls in the toaster oven for lunch I realized I’m not even close to being an adult, yet.

    Hear hear!

I so miss those days, too. The days where I’d wake up and realize I just wanted to sleep in and Media Law could fuck itself. Those were lovely. And now, it’s “get up or don’t make rent.” Just lovely.

I always wondered why people would take more than four years to graduate and move into “the real world.” Now that I have, I soooooo 100% understand.

  6. 6 Alice Says:

i had a fine time in college, but they def were not my glory days. well, maybe the year i lived abroad :-) but i was more than happy to graduate and start a new life… and hell, the years i worked at usairways were basically the equivalent of normal college years. i certainly drank & partied more from 21 – 24 than i did in college… and those days i DO miss :-)

  7. 7 Lemmonex Says:

It was very painful to admit to myself college was a huge waste for me.

I would not change a second.

  8. 8 Far Says:

ahhh a trip down memory lane!

  9. 9 Tough Girl 101 Says:

Your college life is incredibly different from mine. Just so you know, mine was no where near that fun.

  10. 10 Uncle Ebenezer Says:

I think about those days often. A time when there were like almost no responsibilites and all I had to do was get stoned and… well, that was about it. Good times. Being an adult totally sucks.

  11. 11 e. Says:

I miss being carefree too! Those were the days… ;)

  12. 12 Froggy Says:

You know… I made it through my entire four years of college and only paid for weed once.

    Three dollars.

And I spent the better part of my senior year fucked out of my gourd.

It was good to be me :)

Too bad that couldn’t extend into adulthood… the other day someone in my building was very clearly smoking the good shit, and I had a very strong urge to start knocking on doors and shouting “let me in!!”

But I don’t think that flies in the adult world. *sigh*

  13. 13 ballerina toes Says:

College weed was absolutely the best. We called the really good shit, “bulgarian north slope”. Does weed even grow in Bulgaria? I’m pretty sure we were pretty baked when we came up with that. Good times.

  14. 14 littlespoon Says:

I find myself reminiscing about college days a lot. I miss my friends and I especially miss that special high :)

  15. 15 Liebchen Says:

I go back and forth on missing college. Now, for instance, I don’t envy the finals/term papers that I’d have to be taking/writing. But getting a good month and a half of winter break to do anything I pleased? Yeah, *that* I miss.

  16. 16 Passionista Says:

I agree with the less responsibility! I definitely miss sleeping in because my lecture was so big they never took attendance.

  17. 17 Paula Says:

I miss the feeling of being able to skip class and do nothing. I used to go to uni ostensibly for a class and then end up hanging out in the common room or student union instead. It was awesome.

Of course it SUCKED having no money . . .

  18. 18 Matt Says:

    College weed is the best.

I just cant find that shit anymore.

    Probably a good thing.

  19. 19 lily Says:

afuckingmen. sometimes i pretend i’m still 20, which is either grossly irresponsible or charmingly reminiscent when you consider i’m closer to 30. omg. i don’t think i realized that until just now.

    puff puff pass anyone?

  20. 20 Arjewtino Says:

I think you DID mean that kind of fucking around.

  21. 21 rs27 Says:

I miss the days of eating pop tarts for breakfast at 1 pm.

    Oh that was yesterday.

  22. 22 katelin Says:

i miss college all the time. and random dance parties in the middle of the week. those were the best.

  23. 23 alexa Says:

i would go back to college in a heartbeat! and surprisingly not for the partying but to go learn more. i felt like i completely blew off my college education by drinking, smoking and snorting.

  24. 24 Deva Says:

as a quasi-native southwest virginian, i really can’t imagine any place in southwest virginia actually being “magical” :) but on the flip side, i’m glad you enjoyed your time at tech (no sarcasm).

    best,
the girl who went to uva

  25. 25 Bridget Says:

I will never forget the day I was in the midst of waking up and thought to myself, “Oh, I can miss my first class and keep sleeping. It’s not a big deal.”

Then I woke up and realized I have to go to work. I don’t have any option.

    I cried that day.

Thus, the reason I’m going back to grad school — to get back a small dose of a carefree attitude. :)

  26. 26 Meghan Says:

I miss college. I miss the college weed. I miss skipping class to spend the day watching Days of Our Lives. I miss eating no less than 2 meals a day from either packages or fast food outlets. I miss the bad draft beer. Okay, maybe not the draft beer.

  27. 27 Princess Pointful Says:

Man, I was way too responsible in college ever. The joys of being scared you wouldn’t get into grad school.
Now high school– those were my “fuck off and get high” days!

  28. 28 Jenn Says:

What I miss the most about my carefree college days is not the pot, since I still smoke it, but the copious amounts of time off. Three weeks of Christmas vacation! Four months of summer freedom! A week in March for spring break! Now I work at a 9 to 5 Job where I’m lucky to get two weeks off a year. Two measly weeks!

  29. 29 Kristen Says:

Being a grown up is totally lame.

  30. 30 Peter DeWolf Says:

I’m starting to realize that those college/youthful flashbacks never seem to stop happening. Pretty much every Sept. for me.

  31. 31 fizzgig Says:

I think I had this moment around 25. Then I decided, no one makes the rules of life other than me. And, I decided i’ll forever be young at heart, and do what floats my boat. But, I am too smart to burn money like that anymore. Now, I just drink it.

  32. 32 jenniferalaine Says:

I was just having this same conversation the other day! Damn you Beyonce…

  33. 33 so@24 Says:

Thanks D. You know more than anything I want to time travel back to college. I’m now in a funk.

When I build a time machine, you’re coming with.

  34. 34 apollocreed Says:

    Y’all?

  35. 35 deutlich Says:

Hey! There’s nothing wrong with “y’all”

    thankyouverymuch

  36. 36 Beth Says:

Yes, I agree that adulthood is completely overrated. I think we should make a blogger-commune in the mountains and smoke weed all day. Yes please.

  37. 37 Z Says:

I’m with you on this one, especially lately…

  38. 38 E.P. Says:

Hey! I just stumbled over here from 20SB and thought I’d chime in.

I’m totally with you on this. While it’s nice being a young professional with a little bit of money to spend, it was really wonderful being carefree and not having so many responsibilities.
