Dentists Scare the Sh*t Out of Me
Posted by Deutlich on September 25th, 2008 | Filed under: UncategorizedIt’s been a solid three years since I’ve last visited the dentist and that’s probably a “light” estimate. The problem I have is my teeth are prone to cavities. I should have been going every six months because root canals are not exactly fun.
But here’s the thing.
Dentists scare the ever living shit out of me.
I’m the patient that needs the laughing gas BEFORE the numbing shot because the needle alone causes my heart to beat three times as fast as it should. I don’t like the old dentist I went to and I have no idea how to find a really, really good new one.
Under normal circumstances, I’d probably wait another three years to go but I’m pretty sure I have at least two new(er) cavities and I just realized my wisdom teeth are growing in.
And they’re crooked.
Fuck me with a stick! I am in no mood to deal with the dentist, his or her torture devices, or being told I need to floss more.
Those sharp daggers are frightening! Just the thought of them scraping against my gums is giving me goose bumps.
Meh.
Why can’t I just magically make my teeth perfect? Stupid laws of physics. Who needs ‘em anyway?

I always threatened to pull my teeth out and get dentures just so I could AVOID the dentists’ chair.
Yea, it’s that bad.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:53 am
I need to find a new one too, but I also have no idea how to go about finding a new one.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:55 am
You should get a dentist that has tvs on the ceiling like angilio’s! that sounds like luxxxurry
September 25th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Dentists scare me too. I haven’t been in two years, but I’m totally blaming my lack of insurance on that. I have at least three cavities I need to get taken care of, but I’m more afraid of the out-of-pocket cost to get those done than I am of my teeth falling out.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Hell yes.
They are creepy. Have you ever seen that movie “The Dentist,” with corbin bernstein?
I never thought of them the same after that.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Look for Gentle Dentistry. It’s my only hope. Even then, I’m a terrible patient. I hate the smell of hot tooth. ~gag~
September 25th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Aww, I’m not sure we can have anything except a needle injection where I am… I’ve never thought to ask.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
oooooh man, the dentist. *shutter* I feel ya.
I need to go as well….its been several years. And I’m also scared completely. But first, I need to get dental and vision insurance added to my health care plan….hmmmm
Oh, and don’t worry too much about the wisdom teeth. Yeah it generally sucks, but it really wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. They knock you out and you don’t even know what’s going on.
Get a lot of movies ready to watch, as you’re not going to want to do much besides lay around and drool on yourself.

I have a fear of dentists that goes waaaaay back to being 3 years old and having to have both parents, and a nurse hold me down just to have the guy look in my mouth.
If you need the name of a spectactular and very well-seasoned dentist here, let me know. My dentist is one of the best, is hilarious and quirky, can work on a payment plan if you need to, and when I needed a root canal, sent me to a guy who did it painlessly for me.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
ah, wisdom teeth. i had mine pulled last year. actually, i had 3/4 of them pulled, which is super fantastic because it means that WOOHOO i get to go back again for the last one!
i had choices of being conscious, semi-conscious and unconscious for the removal of them. i went semi-conscious and don’t remember a thing. everytime they start to see you move (or something, i don’t know, i was passed out), they hit ya with some more anethstic. but yeah. don’t do it awake. apparently it doesn’t really HURT, but the noise is AWFUL.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
i can tell you why you need ‘em…mastication (ooooh, broke out the SAT word!)
GO NOW!!!!!! OR YOU WILL BE IN FOR YEARS OF EXPENSIVE AND PAINFUL DENTAL WORK.
I can give you a percocet to take before you go…but then you probably shouldn’t drive….
yeah, well the offer stands!
September 25th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
hi, i’m the well-intentioned heartbreaker and i should really slow down while typing comments to refrain from completely butchering words.
*anesthetic
there we go.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
I will pray for you.
September 25th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I HATE wisdom teeth.
That is all.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
I feel your pain, I still have to get my wisdom teeth pulled. But don’t wait long, like I did accidentally. They had to pull one of my back molars because of the way my wisdom teeth came in. The tooth was so bad that it broke on extraction and I don’t think I have to explain how painful it is to take broken tooth fragments out of someone’s mouth, and I definitely did not have enough novacaine! I had tears I tell you.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
my boyfriend had to have the laughing gas too before the needle for sedation when he had his wisdom teeth removed. He was funny when I was taking care of him.
fast forward to two years where I had several cavities to be filled (hadn’t had insurance for years) andI was preggo. I opted NOT to have ANY meds, just to be safe, and I did great. Of course, BF couldn’t watch
September 25th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Aw, if you lived in Chicago, I’d send you to my Uncle. Nicest, most un-threatening dentist alive.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
“Fuck me with a stick!” ~ that gave me a painful visual
September 25th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve lost my fear of the dentist and gained my fear of the dentist bill. And that’s why I haven’t been since I got my wisdom teeth out two years ago.
But as a sidenote, getting my wisdom teeth out did correct a lot of the problems I was having, including headaches that wouldn’t quit.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
The dentist must be the most hated doctor in the universe. That’s probably why they are the doctors with the highest suicide rates. Hmmm….
September 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
man i wish i had perfect teeth too, i would avoid the dentist at all costs if i could, haha.
September 25th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Dentists hate babies.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I cyberstalk you guys so much. As soon as I read “fuck me with a stick,” I knew I could scroll down and find mentalthreesixty’s comment on that turn of phrase.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
You could always just get dentures…
September 25th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Dude I hate the dentist too. That’s why I waited so long to get my root canal/crown. I seriously cry like I’m two when they pull the needle out.
September 25th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I feel your pain! I really need my wisdom teeth pulled, they’re coming in horizontally instead of vertically (i don’t know if I explained it right) and even the dentist warned me “It’s going to be very painful”. Gee, thanks doc. Of course, after that warning I vowed to never get them taken out.
September 25th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Dentist Scare the shit out of me too, when I got my wisdom teeth pulled they put me under crying…sorry!
September 25th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
I am just scared to go to the dentist because I didn’t have dental coverage for a super duper long time, and I don’t want the guilt trip I know is coming!
September 25th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
girl…if you don’t take your ass to the dentist! When your old and have some ol crusty ass dentures you re gonna look back and be mad.
September 25th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
you and my sister should hangout she hates them and hasn’t gone in forever either.
me? i’m a every 6 month, got my first cavity at 27 type of girl : )
xo

The dentist is TERRIBLE. The worst sound in the world is that of teeth getting drilled. I have chills thinking about it. I can’t even stand the cleaning part, but I do like my teeth, so I try to go at least once a year.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:09 am
Mmm. . . you could just num num num everything with just your gums. That might be fun (and gross), but fun.
I hear dentures aren’t so bad.
September 26th, 2008 at 3:31 am
I’ve not been to a dentist since . . . ooh 2003 I think. Luckily my teeth have never been too bad . . . oooh except for the fact that most of a tooth towards the back has kinda fallen out gradually in the past two years. Ooops.
I hate them with a passion though. Dentists, I mean, not teeth.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:23 am
I think I must be a masochist because I like the dentist! I love the scraping of crap off of my teeth.
I just hate the lectures.
September 26th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Ohh I’m the exact same. I DESPISE the dentist- which is rough, because since my mom works at a dental office? I’m in there every 6 months. Yeah. Sucks.
September 26th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Oh wow, me too. My very least favorite part of being at the dentist is when they clean your teeth and scrape them with that metal thing. Augh! It makes me cringe just thinking about it.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Dentist are definitely not anything to take lightly. I simply sit in the chair and sing a song within my head, until all the damage has been done. LOL.
September 26th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
a) i forget, do you have a car? i have a dentist in fairfax i really like. i can give you his name / info.
b) have you heard the commercials around here for sedation dentistry? i hear ‘em on the radio all the time. might be worth checking out? http://www.washingtondcsedationdentist.com/
September 26th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Oh man, I’m sorry!! I was going to recommend the dentists that knock you out too, but it looks like someone got there before me. Good luck with your dental adventures!!
September 26th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Ew – dentists scare me too. I had a bad experience with one once who told me I had 3 cavities and I really didn’t. When in doubt, second opinion – and maybe you’ll find a better dentist along the way.
Good luck!
September 26th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I take it you’ve never had braces. Those really toughen you up to mouth-invasions.
September 26th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I am with you. I’m stalling on two teeth that I am avoiding chewing on. fuck i hate the dentist. you basically have to pay someone to torture you. no thanks.
September 27th, 2008 at 12:30 am
Ha. I’m not scared of them. I just hate them. ‘Stupid’ salesmen. Always trying to get more money out of me. I’m much like you in that my teeth are prone to cavities but I refuse to get any cleaning done unless I’m not in North America.
September 27th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Argh – HATE the dentist.
I had to go for a filling a while back and almost had a panic attack. I saw the needle and just freaked. NEVER AGAIN.
Oh…wait…I’m going next month…
Crap.
September 27th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
My last dentist visit was about 6 or 7 years ago. I’m lucky to have healthy teeth and all, but yeah. There’s a reason why getting me to go is like pulling teeth.
September 29th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
I haven’t been to a dentist in more than two years. Whoops. I also am scared and not into going. Until things start to ache at which point I am going to pick my dentist the smart way…the one that is most liberal with pain medication prescriptions.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I feel your fear… I am just like you in this case – I avoid the dentist for far to long each time!
But then eventually I break down and go, and deal with the pain, cuz I feel I deserve it. Oh man, I am screwed up in the head!
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Even when I manage to floss regularly (which I’ll admit is rare), the dentist is still always telling me to floss more.
Is there some magical flossing technique I’ve yet to learn? And why does no one teach me?
