I HATE Sand, but I Love the Beach
Posted by Deutlich on July 16th, 2008 | Filed under: UncategorizedWhilst DMB, Maxie and Michelle sit on the beach and roast in the sun, I am [quite obviously] inside. All right, so maybe that’s not entirely obvious… but who brings a laptop onto a beach?
No one smart, that’s for sure.
This vacation has been amazing. The house that DMB’s family has for the week is literally on the beach. The Atlantic Ocean is currently serving as our back yard. Whenever I look out there, it’s just astonishing to realize how fucking HUGE that mass of saltwater is. Moreover, it’s incredible to think of all the species within its depths. I doubt we’ll ever fully realize how many water dwelling creatures there are.
The thing about vacation is that it’s meant to be relaxing. If you’ve spent any amount of time with me, I’m sure you’re quickly aware of how high-strung I can really be. While I should be letting go and releasing bad energy, I seem to be harboring it instead.
I think I might have a grown-up version of “the only child” syndrome. I know, I know. Stereotyping. Whatever.
The point is this. When I’m out of my comfort zone and totally at the mercy of whomever I’m with, I don’t always act in the most civilized way. Frankly, I can turn into a roaring bitch.
I don’t handle sleepless nights well. I can’t tolerate even the mildest of sound in the middle of the night (there’s a story behind this, but I won’t get into it now). I don’t like not being able to leave whenever I want, even though I have no intention to do so. I just like the option. Because I’m super strange that way.
The beauty of being here with DMB is that she as quick to tell me when I’m acting like a turd.
Lemme tell you something. There are about 3 people on the entire planet that can get away with pulling me to the side, telling me that I need to chill out and I’ll actually listen without getting ridiculously offended. DMB, obviously, is one of them.
I <3 her.
In the same vein, I often wish I didn’t let the little things get to me so badly. I especially don’t need to project my own insecurities and issues on anyone else while here.
I occasionally have that habit and it’s really fucking awful.
I’m a work in progress.
Sometimes, I really wonder how people are able to tolerate me.
As for the whole crew being on the beach, and me sitting inside blogging? Well, I truly loathe the sand. I hate that it gets everywhere. I don’t dig being oiled up for extra crisp tanning and then the tossing of a beach towel showering me in sand granules.
It wigs me out.
Plus, I tan super duper fast and I do NOT get into the ocean. Sharks and jellyfish and things that can sting or stab me live in there. I figure if I leave them alone, they’ll leave me alone.
Right?
Right.

Haha well I hope you bite the bullet at least once while you’re there. Enjoy your vacation!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Oh you! And your strange idiosyncrasies!
July 16th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I am petrified of Sharks. I even capitalize Sharks because that’s how scared I am of them. Even in lakes I ask people if there are Sharks knowing full well that there are not.
I do love beaches though – sand and all.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
i am such a wuss when it comes to the water too. sharks and jellyfish and regular fish are just not my friends. at all.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Embrace that brown skin of yours! I <3 the beach. I’m actually super duper insecure about when my skin turns that oh-so-nice shade of jaundice-y yellow. For me, that’s what I call october-april. I love summer simply because it makes my mixed skin that shade of golden brown that people pay money for…I bet you get that color too; and it looks hot on you!
Yeah…sand does get everywhere and that sucks. Maybe they have a deck where you can relax and watch the water and laze about? I do hope you’re able to let go an enjoy it.
PS: I’m afraid of ocean critters too. In Barbados, i wouldn’t go more than about 10 feet off-shore.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
get brown, girl! You’re tone is unique and GORGEOUS and looks even better sun kissed.
Also, I can be horrible on my vacations when I’m trying too hard to relax. Knowing is half the battle though, right?
July 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Right there with ya on the sand. Seems to have no problem getting everywhere but takes forEVER to remove itself from every nook and cranny.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I’ve always kind of felt like vacations are too important to share. But then again, I *know* I’m a turd.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
You are right that if you don’t get in the water, you are extremely unlikely to be bitten by a shark or stung by a jellyfish.
Also, I am way jealous of where you are. I don’t like sand getting all up on me but I love the feeling of that outdoor shower you take afterward to get all the sand to go away.
July 16th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I WISH I could tan…My only reasons for avoiding the beach would be fear of blinding everyone around me because I’m so pale! Enjoy the vacay while ya can
July 16th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I’m sure the DMB, Maxie, and Michelle know you well enough to know you just like things the way you like things. And I’m sure they love you to pieces for it! I am the same way about wanting to come and go as I please and just be. That’s why at least 2 times a year I go on vacation by myself. Just go and do me for a minute. I love it!
I have to agree the sand can be a nuisance. I do hate when the sand gets in the crack of my arse. The worse. No matter how much I shower I keep feeling like there is sand up there!

I was watching a documentary about the ocean on the Discovery Channel once, and the narrator said that we know more about the surface of the moon than we know about the ocean floor. Crazy, isn’t it?
I hope you’re having fun at the beach, even if you’re not really GOING to the beach all that much!
July 16th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
believe it or not, i am the same way: “I don’t like not being able to leave whenever I want, even though I have no intention to do so. I just like the option.” i also act differently when i’m out of my comfort zone.
and…i am an only child.
go figure.

“it’s just astonishing to realize how fucking HUGE that mass of saltwater is. Moreover, it’s incredible to think of all the species within its depths. I doubt we’ll ever fully realize how many water dwelling creatures there are.”
My.Worst.Nightmare.

#1 – ur lucky u get tanned. I just burn, then peel right back to white
#2 – I’m right there w/ u about NOT being able to leave when u want. That is the exact reason I like to be the driver whenever I go anywhere…not the passenger who has to wait until my friend is ready to bounce … or leave when I’m not quite ready to.
July 16th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
I’m sorry, but you take all the fun out of the beach! I love the ocean – sun, sand, and surf all the way.
But enjoy it however you can I suppose.
July 16th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I am terrified of jellyfish. I wouldn’t go in the water either.
Enjoy your vacation!
July 16th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
ocean, good
things that sting you, bad
July 16th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
I can completely relate as vacations stress me out that are away from my comfort boundaries (even if meant to relax further). Sand is stressful as well.
But I do hope you get to enjoy some sunshine and relaxation while on vacay
July 16th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
I’ve been to the beach once since moving to California: on the windiest fucking day in March. But damn, it was fun. At least going to the beach and getting sandy and salty has the fun of a nice hot shower to look forward to afterward. Gotta think positive.
July 16th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
he he! good on you for not playing bacon on the beach
Your skin will love you for it.
Do you like beachcombing though? i mean on interesting rocky beaches, not the boring sand ones… sigh. dammit i miss the ocean.
July 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
oh yeah, the sand sucks.
but the sun? and frying underneath it? that rules.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:23 am
I too loathe sand. I wish we could defeat it together, but there’s just too much of it.
As for being the only one blogging inside? That’s totally something I’d do too
July 17th, 2008 at 12:50 am
i missed u!!
and don’t worry, you’ll still be finding sand in your stuff in january.

Last time I was at the beach, it was some ocean in Florida. I was going snorkeling w/my brother & his girlfriend, and above 10 minutes into my dive, I saw a shark. A real, scary shark. Except supposedly it wasn’t all that scary, since it wasn’t as “dangerous” as other types. Whatever. It was a shark & I IMMEDIATELY swam directly back to the boat. Did I mention that I chose to go to the East Coast this summer instead of Florida? Yeah.
Hope your trip stays going well though, and that you don’t get sand stuck everywhere
July 17th, 2008 at 8:19 am
I sometimes have trouble relaxing on the beach too. Especially when you’re trying to take a relaxing stroll by the shore (I also hate sand but love the ocean) and there are kids running everywhere.
I also hate shirt stores. A man can take only a few “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” shirts.
Which beach did you go to? I went to Ocean City this past weekend.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:58 am
You are a full-blown fruitcake. You don’t get into the sea?? Whaaaat?? I’m a bit of a waterbaby so it freaks me out that while I’m sitting inside “working” and looking out at the rain, you are somewhere sunny not taking advantage of the AWESOME SEA!
Damn you…
July 17th, 2008 at 10:15 am
I am with you on the sand thing. It blows.
I’m also not a big fan of being oiled up and –
Oh wait.
July 17th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Your logic is undeniable…dont mess with creatures of the ocean and they wont mess with you!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:19 am
My biggest pet peeve may be when others project their angst to other innocent bystanders. I think the reason why this is my pet peeve is because I am quite well at not doing it. PS, sand rules.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:21 am
I always think that people who are overly tan look trashy – because hello??? – IT CAUSES CANCER!
So I think you are making the right decision.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:54 am
So, thanks for freaking me out 9 days before I go to the beach. I like to play ignorant when I frolick around in the ocean. Frolick?
And, I can totally relate to feeling trapped somewhere. I like the option to leave also, even if I don’t want to.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
I don’t tan either. Brown people have that advantage
July 17th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
“There are about 3 people on the entire planet that can get away with pulling me to the side, telling me that I need to chill out and I’ll actually listen without getting ridiculously offended.”
Aren’t those people the best? I think everyone needs at least one in his/her life at all times.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Sand = the worst. I don’t mind get browner… but I hate the heat, so I feel you. And I love spending time with the three people that can call me on the carpet for being a butthole, too. But even though they CAN tell me that I’m being a butt, I still hate hearing it. I hope you can enjoy your time there and come home feeling rested and rejuvenated.
July 17th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
i always remember vacations are for relazing when it’s time to pack up to go home. it’s silly. but we do it.
and sand in the lady parts? never fun. especially when it NEVER COMES OUT of your tote bag. i keep finding it on EVERYTHING. grr.

Hey, you left a question about what Under Armor was on my blog and I wrote you up a response:
Under armor is this synthetic material that’s really slick. It’s got great circulation so it doesnt get sticky and wet with sweat like some fabrics, and it’s normally skin tight so it doesn’t cause drag. It’s become incredibly popular in the military circle because of how good it feels when it gets really hot, so it works well in the Desert. Athletes are also starting to pick it up too because it doesn’t hold on to sweat as much.

As the cliched but accurate adage says “Admitting it is the first step!”
Hope your holidays is going deliciously!
July 20th, 2008 at 12:02 am
I am soooo jealous… the hottest day of the summer and no one wanted to go to the beach with me…
said it was too hot… black folks I tell ya… aint that the whole point of going to the beach is because its hot outside…
I feel you though… I hate the sand too… it gets in everything…makes your feet look ashy… and always seems like you brought the whole beach home with you because of it
July 20th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I’m with you on the sand – I love walking on it but HATE, HATE, HATE laying on a blanket in it! It gets everywhere! I beach in a nice chair under a nice umbrella if I can, and actually prefer a pool to the ocean – nice clear water with no critters.
I don’t tan – my pale, freckled, green-eyed self just burns a nice lobster red in a ridiculously short amount of time. I <3 SPF 30 in a spray can that does not require rubbing in.
July 20th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I so, so need a beach day. Although I don’t go in the ocean either. Weird..
July 21st, 2008 at 10:34 am
Sand is annoying and I’m hugely afraid og being stung by a jellyfish, but I LOVE the beach and would definitely trade places in a hearbeat. Have fun!
