We’re Big Fat Hypocrites

Posted by Deutlich on May 23rd, 2008 | Filed under: Uncategorized

So, it’s never ceased to amaze me that we’re operating against our own laws. I mean, how is it that we can go after our own citizens (and those of other countries) for breaking OUR laws but we can do it all we want?

If you’re unsure of what I’m referring to, it is definitely Guantanamo Bay.

There are people being held without due process. Unimaginably young children being detained. Horrendous torture practices and all because “we’re at war.”

I don’t get it.. because if anyone was holding our citizens like we are theirs, we’d be pissing ourself with anger and retaliating in the “most diplomatic” manner, whatever the hell that might mean.

First of all, this is reminiscent of the camps in which Japanese were detained during WWII.  That? Just grosses me the hell out.

Secondly, how do we expect to maintain any semblence of dignity if we’re out being assholes?

Third, do we really expect those people to come out of Gitmo and be all, “oh, it’s okay — there’s a war going on.”

Oh HELL no. Those folks are going to get out of there scarred, angry and pissed the fuck off.

And then what?

Hate only begets hate. Fire only causes more fire.

I don’t care what excuses people come up with, it is NOT right for us to act like our shit doesn’t stink, thereby perpetuating a problem instead of rectifying it.

We have done some seriously fucked up shit in the past, and no one seems to want to pay attention to that.. and THEN folks are all, “Why’d they blow up the World Trade Centers like that??? What’d we do?!”

…uhm…

Google that shit.

Amen sister! I’m a big hippie when it comes to the notion of war, but I still try to be realistic about it. However, I really can’t come to terms with how indefinite detainment of supposed “suspects” without evidence, trial and reason would harbor any good feelings towards the US. I don’t wanna go on and on about this, ’cause I’ll rant away… so, I’ll just say, I concur, wholeheartedly!

I completely agree. I have no idea how we play the victim card all the time – when we are off doing the exact same thing to countries who don’t have the means to defend themselves.

    ditto.

I already can’t sleep at night…I don’t know that I can learn more than I already do about this situation. It makes my insides hurt.

I totally agree with you 100%. What really gets me is that such a huge percentage of the American public thinks this stuff doesn’t happen or is made up. It’s awful.

On a different note, that’s so funny that google reader showed my old entries! Yeah, the roomie stuff was really bad, I hope that your situation has been resolved. I have a really hard time letting go of relationships but sometimes, it really needs to be done. And yeah, the girl part of me is thinking, “Why doesn’t this guy like ME? What’s wrong with ME?” but I’m trying not to :P

And now I’ve left a very long comment for you…

um, duh. 9/11 happened bc of all the bullshit we do to the world. we put people down and keep them from having basic human rights, and then they finally get fed up with it, and there are no actual ways of changing anything, so things like terrorism happens. ugh. i am so glad to not be living in the us right now. only 4 more years until i can get a german citizenship…..

  10. 10 katelin Says:

i definitely agree with you. we have some effed up principles in this country and i don’t think anyone knows what to do about it.

amen, sister. it infuriates me how it’s “unamerican” now to even SUGGEST that 9/11 may have had something to do with our own actions. HOW DARE I THINK THAT, I MUST WANT THE TERRORISTS TO WIN.

I’m sure you can imagine that I disagree with you on this front, and on your opinions on the so-called “horrendous torture”. What happened at abu ghraib was horrendous torture. What’s happening in Gitmo… well, let’s just agree to disagree on that one.

Fire only causes more fire. Do I need to remind you that we didn’t start the fire? It was always burning since the world’s been turning.

I’m hoping when the Democrats take over next year, this crap will stop, but I kind of doubt it since no one seems to be addressing it. It really needs to stop now. It shouldn’t have been happening in the first place.

  18. 18 Kali Says:

Ha ha Clarity Sage and the wise words of Billy Joel….

Yeah I agree with everything you said. Also I think you guys get very limited news coverage and are wrapped in cotton wool a bit, which is why it’s taking you all so long to get mad about all this…

    No?

Good post but unfortunately this is nothing new. Its happened with almost every country that has been involved with any war. A certain type or group of people get detained to “maintain the peace” or some bullcrap.

I also realize that sometimes war is unavoidable but this time it wasn’t. The U.S. got into Iraq for an investment and interest for a small percentage of people. It makes me sick because my older bro almost died in Iraq.

  20. 20 Princess Pointful Says:

    Um… hell to the yeah!

  21. 21 Ajemi Says:

    Absolutely agree. It’s sickening!

  22. 22 Random Musings Says:

And Iraq was all about finding Osama. When was the last time his name made it into the news?
